Abstract

The present methods available for the determination of the magnitudes of the vibrational relaxation times of molecules are discussed and the recently developed theory of Schwartz, Slawsky, and Herzfeld is used to compute the variation with temperature of the collisional vibrational excitation probabilities of mixtures of N2 and 02, and of H2 and HF. The results are used to estimate the extent of vibrational temperature lag in the hydrogen-fluorine rocket motor.
