Abstract
The nitrogen recombination reaction and the reaction of active nitrogen with methane were studied. The intensity of the nitrogen afterglow was found to be independent of total pressure at pressures less than three millimeters, and first order in total pressure at nigher pressure. The radiative efficiency of the recombination reaction was found to be very low; only about one- three hundredth of all recombinations resulted in the emission of a light quantum. The reaction of active nitrogen with methane was found to produce CN radiation. It was found that the rate of emission of this radiation may be expressed in a rate law of the following form:
