Abstract
Part I of this thesis is a theoretical investigation of the fraction of a (suitably idealized) genomic DNA which can be found among restriction enzyme partial digest fragments having lengths between Land L+r basepairs long.
Part II of this thesis summarizes some experimental investigations of the structure and evolution of the bacteriophage T4 proximal half tail fiber, its interactions with the distal half-fiber, and the variety of phenotypes exhibited by temperature-sensitive mutations in its structural gene.
