Abstract

A group of patterns formed from white and black dots in a two-dimensional array is designed to exhibit perceptual qualities of known importance to the spontaneous texture discrimination task. The texture qualities of interest, controlled by the specification of nearest neighbor dot correlations, are: granularity and vertical, horizontal, and diagonal directionality. The property of connectivity between dots in the array underlies the granularity and directionality qualities. The test pattern group formed the stimulus for a series of psychophysical and visually evoked scalp potential (VESP) experiments.
