Abstract
The cross section for the reaction γ + p → π⁺ + n was measured at the Caltech synchrotron. The π⁺ was detected in a multichannel magnetic spectrometer, and the data were recorded in the memory of a pulse height analyzer. The results are presented in the form of energy distributions at 12 fixed laboratory angles from 34° to 155°. cross section measurements are reported with photon energies between 500 MeV and 1350 MeV. No detailed fitting of the entire angular range was attempted; however, a narrow bump in the cross section at 180° is explained as the effect of a cusp at the eta meson threshold.
