Abstract
A: This portion of the report contains results obtained from compression tests on 95 thin-walled steel circular cylinder. The tested cylinders were mainly of very small L/R ratio and large R/t ratio.
The results are compared with the existing theoretical failing stresses and are also presented in a non dimensional form, δ/E. The failure stress is best given by the equation δ/E = 9(t/R)1.6 + .16(T/L)1.3. This equation shall be limited for use for L/R greater than 0.1 and for L/R greater than 1.5 assume L/R = 1.5.
B: A visual study of buckle formation is presented to aid future research which may be done on compression of thin cylinders.
