Hi,

My name is Gokcan Karakus.
The purpose of this document is to provide some clarification for the files you can find with my thesis on Caltech Library’s webpage for theses.

The files contain some of the data I collected during my PhD at Caltech. The data sets are mainly divided into three categories: acceleration, velocity and displacement. Because I categorized the state of the California Earthquake Early Warning System, i.e., ShakeAlert, into three main ones (okay-prediction, over-prediction and under-prediction), the data sets are further categorized into three more groups. Moreover, my work looks at the ground motions in two orthogonal directions: horizontal and vertical. So, the data sets are once more divided into two sub-groups: horizontal and vertical.

Please note that most of my codes were in Matlab and I did not have easy access to Matlab after I left Caltech. Because my Matlab code usually reminded me of what data sets meant thanks to my comments and variable names, looking at the data sets without my codes might be challenging for me. That’s why I hope these are the correctly processed data which are ready to feed into classification algorithms. If you cannot reproduce the same results as the ones in my thesis, please let me know so that I could perhaps send you the Matlab codes used for the thesis; the codes might have some pre-processing algorithms. Please contact me if you need further assistance with making sense of how the data sets are structured. You can reach me at gokcankarakus@gmail.com or you can try to contact Caltech Civil Engineering Department; they would probably know how to get in touch with me.

Best regards,
Gokcan
